We can all relate to the feeling of being caught in a daily time crunch, especially in schools, where every minute counts.
Dedicated teachers put in extra effort to arrive at school on time, hoping to beat the clock and avoid the dreaded late mark. The old attendance systemโa clunky manual logbookโoften added stress, especially during peak hours. After class, a similar rush ensued. Teachers would hurry to log out, sometimes bumping into each other in frustration as they watched their valuable planning time slip away.
Itโs no surprise that teachers have longed for a system that frees up their time for what truly matters: preparing engaging lessons and connecting with students. Little did they know, a technological solution was on the way, one that would revolutionize attendance monitoring and allow teachersโand many othersโto reclaim their time.
Thankfully, a new era of efficiency was on the horizon. In the Philippines, this answer came in the form of TIMECATCH, a project inspired by the Department of Education (DepEd). TIMECATCH is an enhanced attendance monitoring system designed to streamline processes for DepEd employees, particularly teachers, supporting efficiency (SDG 9) and fostering a culture of accountability (SDG 16).
Key figures in TIMECATCHโs implementation include Asst. Prof. Ronald B. Rivera, Dr. Benjamin E. Bulawit, Jr., and Asst. Prof. Maricar B. Asis, esteemed professors from the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology at ISU-Angadanan Campus. They secured third place in the Echague Cluster Project In-House Review for Extension and Training, demonstrating the impact of this initiative.
Dr. Rivera recognized the need for a more effective attendance system and was instrumental in securing funding and support for the project. A team of dedicated professionals collaborated to design and implement TIMECATCH, ensuring smooth integration into DepEdโs operations.
At San Guillermo Vocational and Industrial High School (SGVIHS), where attendance was once managed solely with paper and pre-printed forms, the need for a streamlined solution was clear. TIMECATCH was born to address these needs, extending ICT support to SGVIHS through its adoption and utilization.
“Time is the most valuable thing a man can spend,” Theophrastus once saidโa thought that TIMECATCH embodies fully by enabling teachers to save time and focus on meaningful work.
The most surprising thing about this project, though, is the fact that it just works. TIMECATCH seamlessly integrates into the school’s daily operations, offering a user-friendly interface that simplifies the attendance process for both teachers and administrators. The system automatically records attendance, eliminates the need for manual data entry, and generates reports that provide real-time insights into attendance patterns. This efficiency has freed up teachers’ time, allowing them to focus on more impactful work, such as lesson planning, student engagement, and professional development.
Teachers at SGVIHS have enthusiastically embraced TIMECATCH, praising its ease of use and the valuable time it saves them. A dedicated teacher and a respondent from this project expressed the impact of TIMECATCH on the teachers and administrators from SGVIHS:
“From a written DTR to a technology, it changed a lot because, as a teacher, it is really hard on our part to record or write the time daily, and sometimes, some of the teachers change the time on their DTR knowing that they are late. There is no need to write your whole name and time in the records; by just tapping it or putting your finger, it will record immediately. It is easy to use.” stated by one of the respondents of the project.
TIMECATCH exemplifies how technology can enhance the educational experience.
In a time where uncertainty looms over many aspects of globalization, TIMECATCH stands as proof of what innovation and collaboration can achieve in addressing educational challenges. Even within complex educational landscapes, simple and effective solutions can empower teachers and elevate the quality of education. TIMECATCH offers a beacon of hope, proving that with creativity, dedication, and a commitment to supporting educators, we can build a brighter, more equitable future for education in the Philippinesโa vision that resonates with Eleanor Rooseveltโs words: โThe future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.โ
